Below, we list some of our many awards and recognitions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"break-words tvm-parent-container\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/the-2025-james-beard-media-award-winners\">James Beard Foundation Media Award<\/a> for excellence in Health and Wellness reporting for a story about <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/03\/20\/florida-banned-farmworker-heat-protections-a-groundbreaking-partnership-offers-a-solution\/\">the Fair Food Program<\/a>, a grassroots effort to implement heat protections for Florida farmworkers. Civil Eats was also nominated for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/2025-james-beard-media-award-nominees?utm_source=awards&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=2025-05-07\">James Beard Foundation Media Award<\/a> for excellence in Columns and Newsletters for The Deep Dish, our members-only newsletter.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"break-words tvm-parent-container\"><span dir=\"ltr\">Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor <a id=\"ember1331\" class=\"ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/lisaelaineheld\/\">Lisa Held<\/a> was named a semifinalist for the 2025 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting from the <a class=\"UvvzGCORTwtbXWDpsOqapuqGyJJZpggSeQkyodsE \" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/shorenstein-center\/\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\">Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/03\/27\/chemical-capture-the-power-and-impact-of-the-pesticide-industry\/\">Chemical Capture<\/a>, her multipart investigative series, documents the power and influence of the pesticide industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Held\u2019s Chemical Capture series also received an honorable mention in the Investigative category of the <a href=\"https:\/\/sabew.org\/2025\/03\/2024-best-in-business-awards\/\">2024 Best in Business Awards<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/sabew.org\/\">Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing<\/a> (SABEW). Pulitzer Center Ocean Reporting Fellow Alexandra Talty received an honorable mention in the Feature category for her story, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/07\/31\/the-hard-work-of-bringing-kelp-to-market\/\">The Hard Work of Bringing Kelp to Market<\/a>.&#8221; The article is part of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/kelps-tangled-lines\/\">Kelp&#8217;s Tangled Lines<\/a>,&#8221; a four-part series about kelp as a valuable regenerative crop for both U.S. coasts. The story also won an honorable mention in the Business Writing category of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asja.org\/what-we-do\/awards\/2025-writing-award-winners\/\">American Society of Journalists and Authors awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won second place in the North American Agricultural Journalists\u2019 (NAAJ) 2025 Writing Contest for Feature Reporting for their story about <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/06\/05\/on-farms-plasticulture-persists\/\">plastics use in agriculture<\/a>. Contributor Emma Glassman-Hughes also received an honorable mention in the Special Projects category for her two-part series about the Mashpee Wampanoag&#8217;s efforts to <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/08\/21\/on-cape-cod-the-wampanoag-assert-their-legal-right-to-harvest-the-waters\/\">assert their legal fishing rights<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/12\/11\/the-mashpee-wampanoag-work-with-a-cape-cod-town-to-restore-their-traditional-fishing-grounds-and-ecosystem\/\">restore their fishing grounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa Held was named a finalist in the Online, Non-Breaking News category of the SPJ Washington D.C. Chapter\u2019s annual Dateline Awards. Her story, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/02\/20\/the-last-front-in-the-battle-to-save-the-most-important-fish-in-the-atlantic\/\">The Last Front in the Battle to Save the \u2018Most Important Fish\u2019 in the Atlantic<\/a>,&#8221; examines Chesapeake Bay\u2019s menhaden fishery.<\/p>\n<p>Contributor Emma Glassman-Hughes received second place in the food feature category of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.featuresjournalism.org\/blog\/2025\/5\/20\/sfj-journalism-contest-winners-division-3-combined\">Society for Features Journalism&#8217;s 2025 Excellence-in-Features journalism awards<\/a>. Glassman-Hughes&#8217; story documents how the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/08\/21\/on-cape-cod-the-wampanoag-assert-their-legal-right-to-harvest-the-waters\/\">asserting its legal right to fish<\/a> the waters off Cape Cod.<\/p>\n<p>Glassman-Hughes&#8217;s coverage of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe also received two <a href=\"https:\/\/indigenousjournalists.org\/2025-indigenous-media-award-winners\/#1686433074258-dc0fc9a1-c725\">2025 Indigenous Media Awards<\/a>, including second place for Best Feature Story and third place for Best Coverage of Indigenous Communities.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>2024<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Civil Eats won a <a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/entries\/civil-eats-the-deep-dish\/\"><span class=\"award\">2024 Excellence in Newsletters, Single Newsletter<\/span><\/a> for its members-only newsletter, The Deep Dish, from the Online News Association. For the second year in a row, Civil Eats was also <a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/winners\/2024\/\">nominated for General Excellence<\/a> in Online Journalism (micro newsroom) by ONA for the <a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/2024\/08\/09\/ona-reveals-the-2024-online-journalism-awards-finalists\/\">2024 Online Journalism Awards<\/a>, the global prizes that honor excellence in digital journalism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Civil Eats received four awards from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asja.org\/what-we-do\/awards\/2024-writing-award-winners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Society of Journalists and Authors<\/a>. Contributor <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/author\/adriver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alice Driver<\/a> received the Donald Robinson Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism for her reporting on the <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/12\/06\/diving-and-dying-for-red-gold-the-human-cost-of-honduran-lobster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honduran spiny lobster industry<\/a>, which was included in our investigative series, <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/walanthropy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Walanthropy.<\/a>\u00a0 Former Senior Reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/author\/wbrown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wesley Brown<\/a> won in the Social Change category for his story on the <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/03\/08\/how-the-long-shadow-of-racism-at-usda-impacts-black-farmers-in-arkansas-and-beyond\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">historically systemic racism behind the USDA\u2019s<\/a> lack of financial support for Black farmers. And Contributor <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.acemlnb.com\/lt.php?x=3TxtmrUFUqPUT55qA3P3W.dt~62jvQH1lutgX5DLVXjOEK37yg-7UBafAH6ligFfx1OxY5YWIFah950KyN9OWOJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Walton<\/a> won an honorable mention in the Food &amp; Drink category for his story about farmers who see untapped potential in <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/12\/19\/wild-nuts-are-making-a-comeback-in-southern-appalachia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wild tree crops like acorn and black walnut<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won a <a href=\"https:\/\/coveringclimatenow.org\/projects\/the-2024-ccnow-journalism-awards\/#food-ag\">Covering Climate Now award<\/a> for Food &amp; Agriculture reporting for their story &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/09\/20\/how-crop-insurance-prevents-some-farmers-from-adapting-to-climate-change\/\">How Crop Insurance Prevents Some Farmers From Adapting to Climate Change<\/a>.&#8221; The judges noted, \u201cIn this stellar investigation, journalist Grey Moran shows how the program often, ironically, fails to benefit \u2014 and can even penalize \u2014 farmers adopting climate-friendly practices endorsed by the very same USDA. Following publication, the department said it would reexamine practices dictated by the crop insurance program and better align them with the agency\u2019s climate goals. Stories about niche government policy often struggle to engage audiences, but this one is imminently accessible. One judge put Moran\u2019s accomplishment succinctly: \u2018A compelling, readable, sharable story about crop insurance? Amazing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Contributor Kate Nelson won <a href=\"https:\/\/indigenousjournalists.org\/2024-indigenous-media-award-winners\/#1687798629063-83dd8ce8-377e\">second place<\/a> in Health Reporting in the 2024 Indigenous Media Awards for her <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/07\/18\/an-indigenous-led-team-is-transforming-a-minneapolis-superfund-site-into-a-new-urban-farm\/\">story<\/a> about an Indigenous-led team transforming a Minneapolis Superfund site into an urban farm. Nelson also received an honorable mention for Best Environmental Coverage for her <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/03\/13\/alaska-climate-change-driven-fisheries-collapse-food-supplies-indigenous-foodways-food-security-health-nutrition\/\">story<\/a> about how Alaska\u2019s climate-driven fisheries collapse is devastating Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n<p>Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa Held and freelance reporter Ciara O\u2019Brien were finalists in the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists&#8217; <a href=\"https:\/\/mailchi.mp\/c77f21a190df\/dateline-awards-2024-finalists-winners-press-release\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Dateline Awards<\/a> in the Online, Non-Breaking News category for their reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/11\/27\/can-virtual-fences-help-more-ranchers-adopt-regenerative-grazing-practices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtual fences<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/02\/06\/grocery-store-lidl-opening-washington-dc-food-access-redlining-food-security\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new Lidl supermarket<\/a>, respectively. Photojournalist Jake Price was a finalist in the Online Photography category for his photo essay on <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/08\/30\/photo-essay-how-dc-central-kitchen-tackles-hunger-from-food-trucks-to-training-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC Central Kitchen\u2019s efforts to fight summer hunger<\/a> in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n<p>Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won first place for print features from <a href=\"https:\/\/spjlouisiana.wordpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SPJ\u2019s Louisiana chapter<\/a> for their reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2023\/06\/20\/cheap-imports-leave-us-shrimpers-struggling-to-compete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the challenges U.S. shrimpers endure<\/a> in the face of cheap imports.<\/p>\n<p>Held, Reporter Alice Driver, and Contributor Aaron Van Neste were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/blog\/2024-media-award-nominees\">nominated<\/a> for a James Beard Foundation Media Award for excellence in investigative reporting for our 2023 investigation series on Walmart and the Walton Family Foundation, <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/walanthropy\/\">Walanthropy<\/a>.
