In recognition of our work, in 2014, Civil Eats was named the James Beard Foundation’s Publication of the Year<\/a>, in 2019, we were inducted into the Library of Congress,<\/a> and received the inaugural Media Impact Award from the Food & Farming Communication Fund that same year. Below, we list some of our many awards and recognitions.<\/p>\n 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won a James Beard Foundation Media Award<\/a> for excellence in Health and Wellness reporting for a story about the Fair Food Program<\/a>, a grassroots effort to implement heat protections for Florida farmworkers. Civil Eats was also nominated for a James Beard Foundation Media Award<\/a> for excellence in Columns and Newsletters for The Deep Dish, our members-only newsletter. Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa Held<\/a> was named a semifinalist for the 2025 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting from the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School<\/a>. Chemical Capture<\/a>, her multipart investigative series, documents the power and influence of the pesticide industry.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Held\u2019s Chemical Capture series also received an honorable mention in the Investigative category of the 2024 Best in Business Awards<\/a> from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing<\/a> (SABEW). Pulitzer Center Ocean Reporting Fellow Alexandra Talty received an honorable mention in the Feature category for her story, “The Hard Work of Bringing Kelp to Market<\/a>.” The article is part of “Kelp’s Tangled Lines<\/a>,” a four-part series about kelp as a valuable regenerative crop for both U.S. coasts. The story also won an honorable mention in the Business Writing category of the American Society of Journalists and Authors awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won second place in the North American Agricultural Journalists\u2019 (NAAJ) 2025 Writing Contest for Feature Reporting for their story about plastics use in agriculture<\/a>. Contributor Emma Glassman-Hughes also received an honorable mention in the Special Projects category for her two-part series about the Mashpee Wampanoag’s efforts to assert their legal fishing rights<\/a> and restore their fishing grounds<\/a>.<\/p>\n Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa Held was named a finalist in the Online, Non-Breaking News category of the SPJ Washington D.C. Chapter\u2019s annual Dateline Awards. Her story, “The Last Front in the Battle to Save the \u2018Most Important Fish\u2019 in the Atlantic<\/a>,” examines Chesapeake Bay\u2019s menhaden fishery.<\/p>\n Contributor Emma Glassman-Hughes received second place in the food feature category of the Society for Features Journalism’s 2025 Excellence-in-Features journalism awards<\/a>. Glassman-Hughes’ story documents how the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is asserting its legal right to fish<\/a> the waters off Cape Cod.<\/p>\n Glassman-Hughes’s coverage of the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe also received two 2025 Indigenous Media Awards<\/a>, including second place for Best Feature Story and third place for Best Coverage of Indigenous Communities.<\/p>\n 2024<\/strong><\/p>\n Civil Eats won a 2024 Excellence in Newsletters, Single Newsletter<\/span><\/a> for its members-only newsletter, The Deep Dish, from the Online News Association. For the second year in a row, Civil Eats was also nominated for General Excellence<\/a> in Online Journalism (micro newsroom) by ONA for the 2024 Online Journalism Awards<\/a>, the global prizes that honor excellence in digital journalism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Civil Eats received four awards from the American Society of Journalists and Authors<\/a>. Former Contributing Editor Lee van der Voo<\/a> won in the Business, Including Marketing category for reporting on the abusive and, in some cases, deadly working conditions of marine observers in the tuna industry<\/a>. Contributor Alice Driver<\/a> received the Donald Robinson Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism for her reporting on the Honduran spiny lobster industry<\/a>, which was included in our investigative series, Walanthropy.<\/a>\u00a0 Former Senior Reporter Wesley Brown<\/a> won in the Social Change category for his story on the historically systemic racism behind the USDA\u2019s<\/a> lack of financial support for Black farmers. And Contributor Daniel Walton<\/a> won an honorable mention in the Food & Drink category for his story about farmers who see untapped potential in wild tree crops like acorn and black walnut<\/a>.<\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won a Covering Climate Now award<\/a> for Food & Agriculture reporting for their story “How Crop Insurance Prevents Some Farmers From Adapting to Climate Change<\/a>.” The judges noted, \u201cIn this stellar investigation, journalist Grey Moran shows how the program often, ironically, fails to benefit \u2014 and can even penalize \u2014 farmers adopting climate-friendly practices endorsed by the very same USDA. Following publication, the department said it would reexamine practices dictated by the crop insurance program and better align them with the agency\u2019s climate goals. Stories about niche government policy often struggle to engage audiences, but this one is imminently accessible. One judge put Moran\u2019s accomplishment succinctly: \u2018A compelling, readable, sharable story about crop insurance? Amazing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Contributor Kate Nelson won second place<\/a> in Health Reporting in the 2024 Indigenous Media Awards for her story<\/a> about an Indigenous-led team transforming a Minneapolis Superfund site into an urban farm. Nelson also received an honorable mention for Best Environmental Coverage for her story<\/a> about how Alaska\u2019s climate-driven fisheries collapse is devastating Indigenous communities.<\/p>\n Senior Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa Held and freelance reporter Ciara O\u2019Brien were finalists in the Washington, D.C. chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2024 Dateline Awards<\/a> in the Online, Non-Breaking News category for their reporting on virtual fences<\/a> and a new Lidl supermarket<\/a>, respectively. Photojournalist Jake Price was a finalist in the Online Photography category for his photo essay on DC Central Kitchen\u2019s efforts to fight summer hunger<\/a> in the nation\u2019s capital.<\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Grey Moran won first place for print features from SPJ\u2019s Louisiana chapter<\/a> for their reporting on the challenges U.S. shrimpers endure<\/a> in the face of cheap imports.<\/p>\n Held, Reporter Alice Driver, and Contributor Aaron Van Neste were nominated<\/a> for a James Beard Foundation Media Award for excellence in investigative reporting for our 2023 investigation series on Walmart and the Walton Family Foundation, Walanthropy<\/a>. Reporter Virginia Gewin was\u00a0nominated for a James Beard Foundation Media Award for excellence in health reporting\u00a0on the Salton Sea<\/a>.<\/p>\n Moran won first place in the North American Agricultural Journalists\u2019 (NAAJ) 2024<\/a> Writing Contest for News Reporting for their story, “How Crop Insurance Prevents Some Farmers from Adapting to Climate Change<\/a>.” Moran also won third place from NAAJ in the Next Generation\/Young Writer<\/a> category for their reporting<\/a>. Held won third place from NAAJ for Feature Reporting<\/a> for her story, “Walmart\u2019s \u2018Regenerative Foodscape,’<\/a>” part of our 2023 Walanthropy<\/a> investigative series. Both Moran and former Executive Editor Twilight Greenaway received honorable mentions in the same category<\/a> for their reporting on paraquat<\/a> and regenerative chicken farming<\/a> respectively. Held also won an honorable mention from NAAJ in the Ongoing Reporting\/Series<\/a> category for her reporting on the farm bill<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Reporter Alice Driver <\/span>won<\/span><\/a> the Anthony Lukas Work-in-Progress Award for her book, <\/span>The Life and Death of the American Worker<\/span><\/i><\/a>, which includes <\/span>reporting<\/span><\/a> previously published in our investigative series, Injured and Invisible<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Reporter Gabe Pietrorazio won an honorary mention<\/a> from the Military Reporters and Editors for his reporting<\/a> on food insecurity in the military.<\/p>\n 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Anne Marshall-Chalmers and Staff Reporter Grey Moran won Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists<\/a>, Northern California chapter. Their series of stories on climate crisis solutions, including a surge in drought-resistant agave farming<\/a>,\u00a0flooding fields\u00a0after heavy rains for\u00a0groundwater restoration<\/a>, and planting\u00a0hedgerows<\/a> for carbon sequestration and other environmental benefits, were named best environment reporting (print\/online).<\/p>\n Former Staff Reporter Anne Marshall-Chalmers won a 2023 International Association of Culinary Professionals Food Writing Award<\/a>\u00a0for climate solutions reporting on the promise of agave<\/a> in partnership with Edible Communities.<\/p>\n Civil Eats was named a Micro Newsroom Finalist<\/a> by the Online News Association for the 2023 Online Journalism Awards, the global prizes that honor excellence in digital journalism.<\/p>\n Civil Eats was named a finalist for the Insight Award for Visual Journalism<\/a> by the Institute for Nonprofit News Awards 2023 for Civil Eats TV: Women Brewing Change at Sequoia Sake<\/a>.<\/p>\n Former Senior Reporter Kalen Goodluck won second place in the 2023 Native American Journalists Association’s National Native Media Awards<\/a> for his story, This Pilot Program Is Supporting Tribal Food Sovereignty with Federal Dollars<\/a>.<\/p>\n Associate Editor Christina Cooke, former Senior Reporter Gosia Wozniacka, and Contributor Alice Driver were awarded<\/a> a James Beard Foundation Media Award for excellence in investigative reporting for our 2022 investigation series on animal agriculture workers, Injured and Invisible<\/a>.<\/p>\n Associate Editor Christina Cooke and Senior Staff Reporter Lisa Held each won OEMME Awards<\/a>: Cooke for the first article<\/a> in our Injured and Invisible investigative series, and Held for an article<\/a> on why OSHA and the EPA are not enforcing standards to protect farmworkers from pesticides.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Reporter Gabriel Pietrorazio won second place<\/a> in the North American Agricultural Journalists\u2019 (NAAJ) 2023 Writing Contest for his profile of the Indigenous-led nonprofit Wild Bearies<\/a>. Pietrorazio also won third place<\/a> in the group\u2019s 2023 Next Gen Young Writers award for his reporting for Civil Eats, and Staff Reporter Grey Moran won an honorable mention for their reporting for Civil Eats, with the judges noting, \u201cThis writer provides a strong voice to those who might be considered non-mainstream agriculturalists.\u201d Senior Staff Reporter Lisa Held won an honorable mention<\/a> from NAAJ in the news category for her investigation on frac sand mining<\/a> for \u201c<\/i>providing useful details on the issue and going beyond the familiar narrative.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Reporter Jennifer Oldham\u2019s “As Drought Hits Farms, Investors Lay Claim to Colorado Water<\/a>,” won first prize in the business category of the 2023 American Society of Journalists and Authors<\/a> (ASJA) Writing Awards. The judges noted: \u201cThis story is a captivating tale about the collision of water rights, economic growth and rapid population growth. The author provides extensive information about the owners of water distribution companies and the conflicts between farmers and non-rural users of water. As water resources become more scarce, this story sheds much-needed light on a topic that profoundly affects our lives and the lives of generations to come.\u201d<\/p>\n Reporter Alice Driver\u2019s “Tyson Says Its Nurses Help Workers. Critics Charge They Stymie OSHA.<\/a>” received an honorable mention for the 2023 Donald Robinson Memorial Award for Investigative Journalism from ASJA. The judges noted: \u201cWe felt this story also showed extensive reporting and interviewing, which was well incorporated into a story along with statistics and an exploration of federal standards and rules. The story did an excellent job of portraying what has been found in federal investigations. It was a tremendous enterprise story.\u201d<\/p>\n Senior Reporter Wesley Brown\u2019s story,\u00a0\u201cBlack Farmers in Arkansas Still Seek Justice a Century After the Elaine Massacre<\/a>,\u201d was selected for inclusion in Best American Food Writing 2023<\/i><\/a>, guest edited by Mark Bittman.<\/p>\n 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n Our article, “Craft Beer Faces a Gender and Race Reckoning<\/a>,” received the Best Commentary award from the North American Guild of Beer Writers.\u00a0Civil Eats also received\u00a0the digital media award<\/a>\u00a0from the International Association of Culinary Professionals\u00a0for best newsletter or our monthly members’ content The Deep Dish. Reed Environmental Writing Award from the Southern Environmental Law Center.
