But as Civil Eats\u2019 reporting has shown over the past 15 years, the impacts of those pesticides are profound and span the entire food chain\u2014from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fenvs.2021.643847\/full\">threatening important organisms in soil<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwwn.cdc.gov\/NIOSH-WHC\/chart\/sensor-pe\/exposure?T=ZS&amp;V=C&amp;S=&amp;D=ALL&amp;Y=\">causing illness due to acute exposure<\/a> during use.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past few decades, attention to those risks has grown in some ways, as evidenced by the annual popularity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/foodnews\/dirty-dozen.php\">Environmental Working Group\u2019s Dirty Dozen campaign<\/a>, among others. However, as sales of organic food <a href=\"https:\/\/ota.com\/news\/press-releases\/22820\">nearly doubled<\/a> in the U.S., topping $60 billion in 2022, and attention to regenerative agriculture practices <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2019\/09\/17\/investment-in-regenerative-agriculture-connects-the-dots-between-soil-and-plate\/\">soared<\/a>, pesticide use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0918en\/cc0918en.pdf\">continued to increase<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, in 2020, American farmers beat out every other country in the world in terms of the volume of pesticides applied, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fao.org\/3\/cc0918en\/cc0918en.pdf\">an analysis from the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/a>. And between 1990 and 2020, the amount of pesticides used per acre increased by 33 percent.<\/p>\n<p>During that same time period, a series of mergers has made the top pesticide and seed manufacturers bigger and more powerful than ever. Four companies\u2014ChemChina (which owns Syngenta), Bayer (which absorbed Monsanto), BASF, and Corteva Agriscience (formerly Dow and DuPont)\u2014now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.etcgroup.org\/files\/files\/food-barons-2022-full_sectors-final_16_sept.pdf\">control more than 62.3<\/a> percent of the world\u2019s pesticide sales. In the U.S., that number is likely much higher.<\/p>\n<p>And the strategies some of those companies have employed over the years to keep products linked to serious risks on the market are <a href=\"https:\/\/usrtk.org\/monsanto-papers\/state-court\/\">increasingly well-documented<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenewlede.org\/paraquat-papers-media-library\/\">in court records<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There are countless questions to be asked, studied, and debated regarding when and where pesticides are necessary or appropriate, which Civil Eats\u2019 regular reporting will continue to explore.<\/p>\n<p>In this series, however, we will investigate whether consolidated corporate power may be contributing to the ubiquitous use of chemicals, making it difficult to sort facts from marketing or engage in rigorous cost-benefit analyses.
