For our small staff, it\u2019s an all-hands-on-deck effort in addition to our regular publishing cadence. We start with a brainstorm, which arises from topics that are clearly gathering force in our food system, with implications for all of us. <\/p><\/div><div class=\"post-simple\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-image-caption align-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1401223384000-t1largjbflogo.webp\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/1401223384000-t1largjbflogo.webp\" alt=\"a black and white drawing of a circular logo with a man's face in the middle and the words \"James Beard Awards for Excellence\" around it\"><\/a><div class=\"post-caption\"><p>Civil Eats has been nominated for two 2025 James Beard Journalism Awards.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once we\u2019ve settled on a topic, and created a mesh of stories that amplify and resonate with one another, we assign reporters, research photos, and identify potential art. This intense work is deeply gratifying, allowing us to go deep on a topic, and we see newsletter open rates of 80 to 90 percent\u2014far exceeding the industry average.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For \u201cIndigenous Foodways,\u201d we delved more deeply into a topic we cover year-round, and invited Civil Eats contributor Kate Nelson, an Alaska Native Tlingit tribal member, to guest-edit. Nelson also wrote a piece herself, about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/02\/12\/the-land-back-movement-is-also-about-foodways\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the connections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between tribal food sovereignty and the Land Back movement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other stories touched on tribal issues in the endlessly delayed farm bill, Navajo water rights, a prized fish called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/01\/30\/op-ed-the-clear-lake-hitch-and-the-tribes-that-depend-on-them-face-continuing-threats\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear Lake hitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and an interview with ethnobotanist and food sovereignty activist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/02\/06\/listen-to-plants-says-indigenous-forager-and-activist-linda-black-elk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Linda Black Elk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These stories, we felt, had much to teach us about Indigenous foodways and how to begin to decolonize our experiences with food and agriculture.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With \u201cRevitalizing Home Cooking,\u201d we enlisted a star-studded group of experts to help address many of our home cooking challenges, and in the process, help remind us that cooking can be both joyful and a meaningful way to support a good, fair, and just food system. Cookbook author Kim O\u2019Donnel spoke to us about why<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/04\/15\/home-cooking-can-be-stress-free-and-part-of-a-sustainable-food-system\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cooking is the cornerstone of sustainability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; we got <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/05\/13\/nik-sharma-offers-his-top-tips-for-home-cooks-to-fight-recipe-fatigue\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tips on meal prep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from cookbook author Nik Sharma; we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/05\/07\/a-guide-to-climate-conscious-grocery-shopping\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went shopping <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with author and climate consultant Sophie Egan; we learned the best ways to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/05\/20\/getting-schooled-on-preserving-and-storing-food-with-civic-kitchen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preserve and store food<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from San Francisco\u2019s Civic Kitchen and how to handle leftovers with writer Tamar Adler; and got inspired by some seriously ambitious dorm-room cooks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-quote\"><p>We\u2019re thrilled to be heading to Chicago this June for the award celebration, and to be among many other talented journalists from across the country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are especially glad that \u201cFood on the Ballot\u201d was recognized by the Beard Foundation, given the profound impact of the 2024 presidential election. The issue examined the candidates\u2019 approaches to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/09\/16\/labor-protections-for-immigrant-food-workers-are-at-stake-in-the-2024-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">immigration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2019\/05\/29\/where-the-2020-presidential-candidates-stand-on-food-and-farming\/#:~:text=The%20seven%2Dhour%20event%20gave,fit%20into%20their%20climate%20plans.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/10\/08\/for-contract-farmers-the-election-could-change-everything-or-nothing-at-all\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">corporate farming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/09\/17\/can-lawmakers-really-tackle-high-food-prices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">food prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (we hosted a related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/09\/25\/the-high-cost-of-groceries-experts-weigh-in\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">member salon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the topic of inflation and groceries). We also scrutinized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/09\/18\/jd-vance-invested-in-acretrader-heres-why-that-matters\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AcreTrader<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a farm real-estate investment platform that counted then-vice-presidential candidate J.D. Vance among its investors. That reporting remains among the top read stories on our site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The elections issue was probably the longest we\u2019ve ever published, and our members responded with enthusiastic open rates and click-throughs. Their engagement helped support our decision, this year, to launch the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/food-policy-tracker\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Civil Eats Food Policy Tracker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, entirely focused on federal policy action in Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve also been nominated and won additional accolades for the Deep Dish from other organizations beyond the Beard Foundation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, we won a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/awards.journalists.org\/entries\/civil-eats-the-deep-dish\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2024 Excellence in Newsletters, Single Newsletter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Online News Association, and in 2020, we received <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iacp.com\/awards\/2022-iacp-award-winners\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the digital media award<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for best newsletter from the International Association of Culinary Professionals.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Health and Wellness<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div><div class=\"post-simple post-capital-letter\"><p>Moran\u2019s sharply observed story took place as Florida banned local heat regulations for farmworkers, including a requirement that employers provide water, shade, and breaks for workers laboring in the hot sun. The piece covered the alternative protections offered by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/2024\/03\/20\/florida-banned-farmworker-heat-protections-a-groundbreaking-partnership-offers-a-solution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fair Food Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from the state\u2019s legendary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coalition of Immokalee Workers<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"post-simple\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the story was published, more coverage followed extolling the Fair Food Program as a solution to Florida\u2019s heat protection ban, including at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdpb.org\/2024-04-12\/florida-blocks-heat-protections-for-workers-right-before-summer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NPR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc-2.com\/article\/controversial-florida-bill-threatens-heat-protections-for-outdoor-workers\/60269560\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NBC affiliate<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Southwest Florida,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/08\/florida-no-shade-law-endangers-airport-workers-outdoor-laborers-farmworkers-gardeners\/73611783007\/\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Today<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the national Latino radio network<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/radiobilingue.org\/en\/news\/heat-protections-for-florida-farmworkers\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radio Bilingue.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Moran also discussed the story on two radio programs:<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalw.org\/show\/your-call\/2024-05-22\/many-workers-lack-heat-protections-as-temperatures-hit-record-highs\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KALW Public Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodsleuth.transistor.fm\/episodes\/grey-moran-staff-writer-at-civil-eats-discusses-plastic-use-in-agriculture-and-climate-injustice\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food Sleuth Radio<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A few months after the article was published, the Fair Food Program <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was awarded a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepacker.com\/news\/social-responsibility\/fair-food-program-growers-receive-over-15m-usda-grants\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$15 million grant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, helping it expand to more farms.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"post-image-caption align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/240320-field-report-florida-farmworker-heat-protections-fair-food-program-ffp-farm-credit-organic-standards-1-top.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/240320-field-report-florida-farmworker-heat-protections-fair-food-program-ffp-farm-credit-organic-standards-1-top.jpg\" alt=\"Farmworkers clear out irrigation for an okra field near Coachella, California. (Photo credit: Mario Tama, Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"post-simple\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are models like the Fair Food Program that offer a way forward even under governments that are hostile to workers,\u201d Moran said. \u201cI&#8217;m honored by this nomination, and also hope it shines a light on this critical model for workers&#8217; rights.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For \u201cBlack Earth,\u201d about North Carolina farmer Patrick Brown\u2019s purchase of the plantation where his ancestors were enslaved, Cooke wove family history into a lyrical story of reclaiming land and community. \u201cOver my multiple visits to Patrick\u2019s farm over the course of a growing season, I came to appreciate the depth of his story, which stretches back generations, and understand why people I spoke with described him as a \u2018north star\u2019 and a \u2018guiding light\u2019\u2014someone who is finding a better way and reaching back to bring others along,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b>Hoping for Another Beard<\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/div><div class=\"post-simple post-capital-letter\"><p>This isn\u2019t the first time Civil Eats has been nominated for or won a James Beard award. We were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/2014-jbf-publication-of-the-year-civil-eats\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/2014-jbf-publication-of-the-year-civil-eats\"> Publication of the Year<\/a> in 2014. Staff Reporter and Contributing Editor Lisa <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Held, Contributor Alice Driver, and Contributor Aaron Van Neste were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/blog\/2024-media-award-nominees\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nominated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a Beard award for excellence in investigative reporting for our 2023 series on Walmart and the Walton Family Foundation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/walanthropy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Walanthropy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
