The farmworkers draft their own workplace safety rules, reflecting the hazards they face in the workplace, and they can report any violations to a third-party council that is available around the clock. Consumers who buy food with the FFP certification can rest assured that those farmworkers have a say in implementing and defending their own rights as the threat of extreme heat deepens.<\/p>\n<p>As Florida\u2019s ban on worker heat protections went into effect, our story helped build momentum for this groundbreaking solution\u2014not just in Florida, but anywhere workers lack legal protections from extreme heat and other hazards.<\/p>\n<p>Following publication of Moran\u2019s piece, a wave of articles extolling the Fair Food Program began to appear, including in <a href=\"https:\/\/modernfarmer.com\/2024\/06\/farmworkers-cannot-wait-for-osha-to-adequately-protect-them-from-heat-the-fair-food-program-provides-a-solution\/\">Modern Farmer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sdpb.org\/2024-04-12\/florida-blocks-heat-protections-for-workers-right-before-summer\">NPR<\/a>, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc-2.com\/article\/controversial-florida-bill-threatens-heat-protections-for-outdoor-workers\/60269560\">NBC affiliate <\/a>in Southwest Florida, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2024\/05\/08\/florida-no-shade-law-endangers-airport-workers-outdoor-laborers-farmworkers-gardeners\/73611783007\/\"><em>USA Today<\/em><\/a>, and the national Latino radio network <a href=\"https:\/\/radiobilingue.org\/en\/news\/heat-protections-for-florida-farmworkers\">Radio Bilingue.<\/a> Moran also discussed the story on two radio programs: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kalw.org\/show\/your-call\/2024-05-22\/many-workers-lack-heat-protections-as-temperatures-hit-record-highs\">KALW Public Media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/foodsleuth.transistor.fm\/episodes\/grey-moran-staff-writer-at-civil-eats-discusses-plastic-use-in-agriculture-and-climate-injustice\">Food Sleuth Radio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Civil Eats team was also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesbeard.org\/stories\/2025-james-beard-media-award-nominees\">nominated<\/a> in the Columns and Newsletters category for The Deep Dish, our <a href=\"https:\/\/civileats.com\/about\/become-a-member\/\">members-only<\/a> newsletter.
